It would appear that the Listed Victorian Metropolitan Horse Trough is no longer being maintained by the Highways Department, Islington Council. Click here to see the London Picture Archive photograph of the Clerkenwell Green Water Trough in 1978, blooming with hyacinths. The Clerkenwell Green Preservation Society wishes to initiate a Team of willing “Volunteer Hands” to plant and maintain the Trough on a Rota System, so it is a joy behold!
If you are able to give up some of you spare time to help maintain the Cattle trough, then please get in touch using our Contact Page.

Today, members of the CGPS planted the trough!
There’s a variety of perennial plants and grasses which we hope will serve The Green well throughout this late summer and autumn. Mirage Cherry Red, Sky Rocket, Black Eyed Susan, Hot Lips and Princess Caroline are all now resident in Clerkenwell Green.
Thanks to Simon at The Crown for supplying the most important ingredients, drinks and water. Thanks also to the many kind people along the way who admired and appreciated the trough.
We’ll see how the plants settle and maintain over the coming months.
